Born in 1965 in Hanover, grew up in Lower Saxony (Hanover/Braunschweig), graduated from high school in 1984 in Wolfenbüttel, completed military service in 1985–86, studied electrical engineering (high-frequency and optical communications engineering at the Technical University of Braunschweig), wrote a thesis in semiconductor physics
