At the same time, he attended night school and studied at the Lower Saxony University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and Justice as well as at the University of Hamburg. In 2014, Pundt ran as an independent candidate in the mayoral election in Hatten and was elected mayor.

He ran again as an independent in the 2021 district administrator election, though with the support of the SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens, the FDP, and the UWG Oldenburg.

He won in the first round with about 63% of the vote.
