Nicholas Balaresque has been Managing Director of Deutsche WindGuard Engineering GmbH since 2010 and, since 2019, has also served as Managing Director of Deutsche WindGuard Wind Tunnel Services GmbH. He is responsible for Deutsche WindGuard’s wind tunnel center, which now comprises eight wind tunnels, and oversees the development and operation of testing environments for industry and research.

Among the wind tunnel center’s special features are a calibration laboratory accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 with an annual calibration capacity of over 20,000 sensors, as well as a wind tunnel developed specifically for aeroacoustic research, which is increasingly being used for testing unmanned aerial systems.

After studying mechanical engineering at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM) in Valparaíso, Chile—a degree he completed at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) —he took over as director of the Deutsche WindGuard Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel (DWAA) in Bremerhaven.

His work focuses on experimental aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, as well as on the development, integration, and validation of sophisticated measurement technology for systems subjected to aerodynamic loads—in particular, wind tunnel models and drone platforms. In addition, he is involved in numerous national and international collaborative research projects and publishes technical articles on wind tunnel measurement technology, experimental aerodynamics, and free-field measurements on wind turbines.
